“For all those who think the game is over, it is not,†says Mamata Banerjee, Chief, Trinamool Congress (TMC), on Friday (June 15). 6 PM on Friday, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had staged a coup of sorts, “I propose Pranab’s name for President.†With Pranab Mukherjee, as its Presidential candidate, the victory of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate is being called a foregone conclusion.
Mayawati, Chief, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) said, “We think Pranab Mukherjee is the most qualified and a serious contender in the race for presidency.†Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chief, Samajwadi Party (SP), says, “Our spokesperson has already extended support to Pranab’s candidature as President and I fully support his stand.†With that emphatic support for Pranab, Mulayam is rendering his agreement with Mamata redundant.
Reporter: Do you feel cheated by Mulayam?
Mamata: I don’t want to say anything. He is a politician.
Marginalised? Perhaps but still itching for a fight setting the stage perhaps for what many say could be a dramatic exit from the UPA.
Reporter: Are you going to join the UPA?
Mulayam: I don’t want to say anything.
Reporter: If Mamata Banerjee is taken out from UPA II, will you then be a part of UPA II if you are invited to?
Mulayam: What are you saying? Where am I going to be a part of the Govt?
Shortly after being nominated for the Presidential race, Pranab making a gesture of reconciliation yet Mamata appears anything but reconciliatory. For now she’s back in Kolkata attempting to garner support for her Presidential candidate APJ Abdul Kalam through the social networking medium. But knowing Mamata’s temperament she might voice her dissent more verbally and it could be a matter of time before she gets into a spat with the Congress for an eventual split.
